Lake District Walks

From Windermere
Orrest Head and School Knott
The hike begins just a short stroll from Windermere station, following a well-maintained track up to Orrest Head, one of the Lake District’s most beloved viewpoints. From the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a sweeping panorama stretching across Windermere and into the Central Fells beyond – a perfect photo opportunity and an inspiring moment for new hikers.
After a rest, descend through quiet woodland and undulating countryside. The route loops around toward School Knott, a quieter fell with equally lovely views and a real sense of tranquillity. Along the way, we’ll pass old stone walls, trickling becks, and open fields where sheep graze – a quintessential Lake District scene.
The return to Windermere follows easy paths and lanes, making for a gentle finish.

From Ambleside
Loughrigg Terrace and Rydal Caves
Begin in the vibrant village of Ambleside, heading out along a gentle riverside path toward the base of Loughrigg Fell. A steady but manageable ascent brings you to Loughrigg Terrace, a scenic balcony walk high above Rydal Water. Here, the views open out across the lake toward Grasmere, framed by rugged peaks and ever-changing skies – it’s a perfect place to pause and breathe.
Next, descend toward the mysterious Rydal Cave, a former slate quarry that now reflects the light and echoes with footsteps.
From there, the path leads along the peaceful shore of Rydal Water, looping through woodland and up toward Rydal Hall – a beautiful historic estate with landscaped gardens, waterfalls, and a hidden outdoor “Grot” used by early tourists and poets.
After a short break at the hall (with optional refreshments at the tearoom), make your way back toward Ambleside along gentle lanes and footpaths.

From Ambleside
Wansfell Pike and Robin Lane
Your adventure begins in the charming village of Ambleside, where you will make your way through narrow lanes and quiet paths, heading toward the lower slopes of Wansfell Pike. The ascent is steady but manageable, with a few rocky sections and a gentle incline. As you climb, the views begin to open up, with Windermere and the rolling fells in the distance.
At the top of Wansfell Pike, take a well-deserved break and enjoy the incredible panoramic views across the lake and surrounding mountains. This is a great spot to pause, take photos, and reflect on the beauty of the landscape.
After taking in the views, follow a pleasant descent down to Robin Lane, a peaceful route through wooded areas, past old stone walls, and through quiet farmland. The tranquil atmosphere and gentle slopes make this part of the hike perfect for those looking to slow down, reflect, and enjoy the surroundings.
The route then loops back toward Ambleside, with a mix of well-maintained paths and country lanes, offering a gentle and scenic end to the hike.
