Petzl Swift Reactive Lighting 1100
I’ve been using the Petzl Swift RL on night hikes in the Lake District and for alpine starts in the Alps, and it’s one of those bits of kit that genuinely makes a difference when you’re moving in the dark.
The standout feature is the Reactive Lighting. The sensor automatically adjusts brightness depending on what you’re looking at, which sounds like a gimmick until you use it. When I’m hiking and glance down at a map or checking something close-up in the snow, the beam dims itself instantly. Then as soon as I look up again, it ramps back up to full power. It means you’re not constantly fiddling with buttons, and it also helps preserve battery without thinking about it. The reactive mode reduces manual input, so you can just focus on your movement rather than constantly adjusting brightness levels . That’s especially valuable in cold conditions or when wearing gloves.
Out on the fells at night, the light output is seriously impressive. With up to around 1100–1200 lumens available, it easily lights up the trail ahead and gives you confidence on rough ground or in poor visibility. For alpine starts, that extra reach is a big plus when you’re moving quickly over mixed terrain or trying to pick out a line in the dark.
It’s also very lightweight and comfortable. You barely notice it on your head, which matters on longer hikes or early starts when you’ve already got a lot going on. The balance is good and it stays put, even when moving quickly.
The only thing to note is that, like most powerful head torches, you still need to be mindful of battery management if you’re out for long periods or multiple days. And if you switch to manual modes, there’s a slight learning curve to get used to the controls. The headtorch is rechargeable and has a five level indicator to check the battery charge. It has a single button for ease of use for on/off, modes, levels and locking.
Overall, the Petzl Swift RL is an excellent head torch for serious outdoor use. It’s powerful, intuitive, and genuinely smart in the way it adapts to what you’re doing. Whether you’re night hiking in the Lakes or heading out before dawn in the Alps, it’s a reliable piece of kit that adds both convenience and confidence.
