The Best Spring Hikes in the Lake District for Families

Writer: RoseRose

Spring is a great time to explore the Lake District with your family; the days grow longer, wildflowers begin to blanket the hills, and lambs frolic in the fields - all adding to the magic of this iconic landscape. Whether you have little legs in tow or older kids eager for adventure, these three family-friendly hikes offer stunning views, gentle paths, and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife.

1. Tarn Hows Loop

Distance: 2 miles

Difficulty: Easy

Why It’s Great for Families: Smooth paths, pram-friendly, great picnic spots

Following the well maintained path around Tarn Hows

Tarn Hows is a classic Lake District gem and its circular trail is ideal for families. The well-maintained, mostly flat path loops around the tarn, with views of the surrounding fells and reflections of the sky dancing on the water’s surface. It’s a gentle walk, perfect for toddlers who want to toddle or parents pushing a pram.

In spring, the woodland bursts with new life — keep an eye out for daffodils and bluebells and listen for the call of songbirds echoing through the trees. There are plenty of benches along the way, making it easy to stop for a snack or simply soak in the scenery. And if you fancy an ice cream at the end? The nearby National Trust car park often has a van selling treats!

2. Catbells Summit

Distance: 3.5 miles (round trip)

Difficulty: Moderate (a little climb, but manageable)

Why It’s Great for Families: A small challenge with big rewards, panoramic views

If your family is ready for a bit more adventure, Catbells is the perfect introductory fell walk. Rising above Derwentwater, this beloved peak offers breathtaking views across the lake and towards Keswick. While the final push to the summit involves a mild scramble, it’s an achievable challenge for children aged 6+ — and they’ll feel like real explorers when they reach the top.

Pack a picnic to enjoy at the summit, where you can rest your legs and admire the shimmering lake and surrounding mountains. On your way back down, stop by the lakeshore for a paddle or a chance to skim stones!

Aira Force waterfall

3. Aira Force Waterfall Trail

Distance: 1.5 miles

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Why It’s Great for Families: Waterfalls, woodland wonders, and plenty to explore

For a walk that feels like stepping into a fairytale, head to Aira Force near Ullswater. This enchanting trail winds through ancient woodlands, following a bubbling stream that leads to a dramatic 65-foot waterfall! The stone bridges and hidden corners make it an exciting place for kids to explore, while parents can enjoy the lush greenery and the soothing sounds of rushing water.

Springtime brings the forest to life as the wild garlic scents the air, and bright green moss clings to the rocks. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a red squirrel darting through the trees! After your walk, you can relax in the grassy picnic area or take a short detour to Ullswater for a lake cruise.

Stepping stones into Rydal Caves

4. Rydal Water and Rydal Caves

Distance: 3 miles

For a walk that feels like a real adventure, head to Rydal Water. This circular route takes you along the lake’s edge, through ancient woodland, and up to the fascinating Rydal Cave — a large man-made cavern with stepping stones leading across a pool inside. It’s a magical spot that kids will absolutely love exploring.

The trail is easy to follow and relatively gentle, though there are a few short inclines. In spring, the landscape bursts with colour, and you might even spot swans or herons on the lake. It’s a great choice for families who want a varied walk with plenty to see and do along the way.

Beautiful views of Buttermere and the surrounding fells

5. Buttermere Lake Circuit

Distance: 4.5 miles

Difficulty: Easy

Why It’s Great for Families: Flat, scenic, and peaceful

If you’re after a slightly longer but still gentle walk, the circuit around Buttermere is a winner. The well-maintained path circles the entire lake, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and plenty of picturesque spots to stop for a snack or some stone-skimming.

In spring, the lake is surrounded by lush greenery and dotted with bright yellow daffodils. The reflections of the peaks in the water are breathtaking, and the trail even takes you through a short tunnel — an exciting surprise for little walkers! The whole route is relatively flat, making it an enjoyable stroll rather than a strenuous hike.

• Pack Layers: Spring weather in the Lakes can be unpredictable, so bring waterproofs and extra layers just in case.

• Snacks & Water: Little walkers (and grown-ups) are much happier with full bellies and plenty of hydration.

• Wildlife Spotting: Bring binoculars for birdwatching or challenge the kids to spot lambs, squirrels, or even deer.

• Leave No Trace: Help keep the Lakes beautiful by taking all your rubbish home and sticking to marked paths.
